The chase of the American Dream is the one motive for carry throughing one # 8217 ; s ends, nevertheless when combined with wealth the dream becomes nil more than selfishness. Jay Gatsby, the chief character of the narrative, is one character that longs for the yesteryear. Surprisingly, he spends most of his grownup life seeking to recapture it and, eventually, dies in this chase. In the yesteryear, Gatsby had a love matter with the attractive immature Daisy. Knowing he could non get married her because of the difference in their societal position, he leaves her to derive wealth to make her criterions. Once he acquires wealth, he moves near to Daisy, # 8220 ; Gatsby bought that house so that Daisy would be merely across the bay ( p83 ) , # 8221 ; and throws excessive parties, trusting by opportunity she might demo up at one of them. He, himself, does non go to his parties but tickers them from a distance. When this dream doesn # 8217 ; t autumn into topographic point like he planned, he asks around if anyone knows her. Soon, he meets Nick Carraway, a cousin of Daisy, who agrees to put up a meeting, # 8220 ; He wants to cognize if you # 8217 ; ll ask for Daisy to your house some afternoon and so allow him come over ( p83 ) . # 8221 ; Gatsby # 8217 ; s personal dream symbolizes the larger American Dream where all have the chance to acquire what they want. Later, in the Plaza Hotel, Jay still believes that Daisy loves him. He is convinced of this and even takes the incrimination for Myrtle’s decease. â€Å"Was Daisy driving? † â€Å"Yes. But of class I’ll say I was ( p151 ) .† He besides watches Daisy as she returns place to do certain her hubby doesn’t injury her. â€Å"How long are you traveling to wait? † â€Å"All dark if necessary ( p152 ) † . Gatsby can non accept that the yesteryear is gone and done with. He believes that he acted for her and beyond his personal involvement and that that should vouch his success. Nick attempts to demo Jay that his dream is inaccessible, but Gatsby innocently replies to Nick’s remark by stating, â€Å"Yes you can, old athletics ( p141 ) † . This shows the assurance that Jay has in carry throughing his American Dream. For Jay, his American Dream is non material ownerships, although it plays a large portion in the fulfilment of his true American Dream, Daisy. Gatsby does non rest until his American Dream is eventually fulfilled. However, it neer comes approximately and he ends up paying the ultimate monetary value for it. Gatsby # 8217 ; s ain features, particularly his compulsion, contributed to his destiny. Despite his attitude toward Daisy and her friends who # 8220 ; are rich and play Polo together, # 8221 ; he, excessively, has been drawn in by the enticement of money and celebrity. Unable to command his obsessional desire to hold daisy, he cares small about the agencies by which he acquires the money to get married her. He associates with known felons, appears to be involved with bootlegging, and is rumored to hold killed a adult male. Finally, he lies about himself and his household to acquire Nick # 8217 ; s assist for his quest. The agency he uses to accomplish his end ends up to be ev erything that he despises about the people who come to his parties. He prefers the pretty semblances he thinks of instead than the rough world of the compulsion that he has allowed to pervert his life and dream. The consequence of this corruptness is that his alleged American Dream has vanished before his eyes. The thought of the American Dream still holds true in today # 8217 ; s clip, no affair if it # 8217 ; s wealth, love, or celebrity. But one thing neer changes about the American Dream ; everyone desires something in life, and everyone, someway, strives to acquire it. Gatsby is a premier illustration of prosecuting the American Dream, and I think that this narrative would learn the reader to be less misanthropic so that we try to accomplish the American Dream and non go forth it as that merely a dream.

Evaluation of factors determining the setting of wages for British Essay

Evaluation of factors determining the setting of wages for British expatriates - Essay Example Human resources can be termed as a critical concern to all managers. It is a crucial resource that exploits all the other resources to produce the desired result in the organization. Thus, the accurate placement of employees is a key element of any organization, which makes the firm to have a competitive edge. The application of the human resource function in multinational companies becomes controversial due to the need to formulate human resource guidelines and structures. The dissimilarity among the nations where branch is located complicates the process of hiring both local and expatriate employees (Baruch 2002, p. 239). This paper will discuss the factors that a human resource director should consider while setting wages for local and expatriate employees working in a multinational corporation. Evaluation of factors to be considered in setting the wages for British expatriate managers and engineers Many Multinational Companies desire to send their current employees to work in a d ifferent nation for a number of factors. First, the citizens in the new nation may not have the knowledge and expertise required in the job. In addition, the expatriate, being a present employee of the organization, has vast skills of the company for organizing all the company’s businesses in the new branch with the mother company (Thite 2009, p. 269). Thirdly, it helps offer the supervisors and senior management with the image needed to be a key decision maker in this global economy. As a human resource director, determining the wages to be paid to expatriates is not an easy task as it incorporates many factors to be considered (Baruch (2002, p. 240). As Caligiuri (2007, p. 294) notes, the calculation of the wages of any expatriate need a careful thought of many factors before one arrives at a wage structure that incorporates all factors. As the human resource of this British Multinational, I will distinguish between the internal and external influences of these wage determi nation strategies. The internal determinants include the rank of employee in the organization, the stage of the family development and the labour category of the employee. Regarding the first factor, I will develop expatriates wages with regard to their ranks in the organization. For instance, I would set different wages for senior managers, middle-level managers and supervisors. Secondly, I would develop a good strategy to categorise wages based on the marital status of the expatriate. I would also consider the nationality of the employee in developing different remuneration structures. The background of the expatriate will also be a significant factor in setting the wages; it would help me come up with the appropriate wage structures. I would highly insist that the young and new expatriates be remunerated like employees of the host country. The highly skilled and experienced expatriates can be remunerated with add-ons, adjustments and incentives, as well as bonuses to their wages. The characteristics of the work assigned can also be the foundation for the wage setting. On this regard, those given complex tasks should earn higher wages than those whose duties are not complex (Friedman 2009, p. 252). The social factors are also remarkable in influencing the wages to be paid to expatriates; these include the society and present discussion structures, for instance, state or industry-broad, local or company. The latter can often tremendously affect the degree of pay diversity and distinct kinds of remuneration and appraisal are satisfactory. Regarding expatriate remuneration, the origin of the company is not likely to have an impact on the wage calculation (Van Der Heijden, 2009 p. 831). Globalization makes

Public Relations Campaigns Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Public Relations Campaigns - Essay Example Public relations are considered as a management function now. It focuses on public behavior or attitudes, and based on that it defines the policies and procedures of an organization. PR should act as a two way path for communication; from public to organization and from organization to public. Such mutual transfer of information will build up confidence between the organization and the public. Though the aim of PR activities doesn’t mean for publicity, most of the PR campaigns include provision for publicity as well. From the above discussion I think it is clear that a mere media release is not enough for recruiting talented graduates in our organization. Since media release is only a one way communication, we will never be able to analyze the public response towards it correctly. The public opinion towards a charity organization like us has to be studied carefully before going for the recruitment. The illusions about charity organizations among the public has to be corrected first. I accept that most of the potential graduates coming out from the colleges will look for other organizations to establish themselves. It is a fact that the youths always like big cities to start their careers. They will always like to have some challenging assignments to start their careers to cement their places in the corporate industry. It is correct that though we are offering competitive remuneration packages and job facilities, it is difficult for us to recruit potential talents to our organization. Considering all the above possible challenges in recruiting potential graduates, I believe that we have to change our conventional strategies of PR campaign. Our campaign should focus on the following things; avoid prejudices about the public opinion especially that of the graduating youths, about charity organizations like us. The results obtained through such researches will definitely help us in making successful

Change Management and Information Technologies Coursework

Change Management and Information Technologies - Coursework Example Change management is of paramount concern within companies, especially in the modern day when changes occur so rapidly and with apparently increasing frequency. The effects on employees must be taken into account when considering these changes. It can be seen as a fulcrum around which many of the great advantages and yet also the challenges of IT revolve. Employees may be empowered to perform new tasks in a much easier manner, and yet may also become disillusioned as they feel they are even more simply a cog within a machine than they were before. While the minutia of instituting change within IT often revolves around practical problems such as software implementation and training of employees, it is just as important to consider the wider implications such as the effect upon the company culture and employee morale of the new technology. These are not peripheral concerns: they are central to the performance of employees and thus the overall success of the company. This analysis will consider how can a manager make sense of the numerous different models and the complexity of the changes that will occur with technological advancements. This has been a central role within business studies for a number of years. The manager needs to be able to consider ahead of time the likely consequences upon both the overall company and specifically upon employee performance before the IT change has occurred. In many ways the culture of the company is most important. A corporate culture can be defined in a number of ways. But in general it consists of a disparate number of forces at work within a company. These include everything from beliefs to systems to the company history to the overall attitude of employees. This might seem overly complex and amorphous for actual practical use, so various attempts have been made to systemize the analysis of corporate culture. One powerful method is through the cultural web. The cultural web is a means of investigating and revealing the culture of an organization. It represents how culture is expressed and how it manifests itself: A Cultural Web The central area of the Venn diagram that represents the cultural web is where the paradigm of change occurs. The manager must view this paradigm within the complexity of the web that has been produced by the various factors that go into the individual sectors:- such as "stories", "power", "symbols", and "routines/rituals". All of these are what make up the culture of a company, and, as can be seen from a cursory glance, they are all 'human' variables that will be held within the general culture of the company. Thus the manager needs to consider how the changes being considered will effect this culture and how, perhaps more importantly, the culture will influence them. This can be related to Baloqun's initial idea of considering the context-specific situation that occurs within a company. The change plan must be made to at least fit reasonably easily within the culture that already exists within the company rather than forcing a radical change within that culture. It is clear that sometimes a radical change in corporate culture is needed (Enron might have benefited from such a change before

POOR HR POLICIES : The plocies and practices adopted by the HR managers regarding their networking sector is an important example. They brought some new plans in mobile networking sector like low call rate for mobile users, low internet browsing charge.etc., but the competitors like AIRTEL communications, BSNL network, VODAFONE facilitated some more exciting offers than the reliance. In that situation the Reliance communication hesitated to change their HR policies and techniques. So the company can reduce the cost of labour so the company can meet the compensation and benifits of each individual according to the profit earned by the company. Employee retention issues Retention of employees is another HR issue faced by the company, nowadays a lot of employees are leaving the company due to high pressure of work and lack of co-ordination between employees are the main employee retention issues faced by reliance communication, to reduce this problems reliance must provide good working enviornment to reduce the pressure of work, communication is another way to over come this problem good communication between the management and staff will make a good understanding between the employees and management, this will increase employees confidents and reduce the work pressure.A high rate of employees resigning their job and going to another companies who offer better working enviornment. Chemistry of LSD and Route of Access Essay -- Chemistry Chemical Scien

Chemistry of LSD and Route of Access Classification Pharmacologically, the commonly abused hallucinogenic substances may be divided into two major groups. The indolealkylamines, including d-lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD), psilocybin, and dimethyltryptamine (DMT) bear a structural resemblance to the neurotransmitter 5-hydroxytryptamine (serotonin). The phenylethylamines, including mescaline and the phenylisopropylamines such as 2, 5-dimethoxy-4-methylamphetamine (DOM, "STP"), are structurally related to dopamine, norepinephrine, and the amphetamines (Gelenberg, Bassuk, Schoonover 1991). Doses Usual doses range from about 25 micrograms to more than 300 micrograms. LSD is known to posses a low level of toxicity; the effective dose is about 50 micrograms while the lethal dose is about 14,000 micrograms. These figures provide a therapeutic ratio of 280, making the drug a remarkably nonlethal compound (Julien 2001). Pharmacology d-Lysergic acid diethylamide is a synthetic hallucinogen derived from an extract of the ergot fungus. The drug is colorless, odorless, and tasteless. It is usually ingested as part of a pill or dissolved on a piece of paper (Gelenberg, Bassuk, Schoonover 1991). LSD is often added to other substances, such as the back of stamps, or sugar cubes, which can be handled more easily (Julien 2001). Following oral administration, the drug is well absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract and distributed to body tissues. Only small amounts are detected in the brain, however (Gelenberg, Bassuk, Schoonover 1991). It also crosses the placenta. The largest amounts of LSD in the body are found in the liver, where the drug is metabolized be... ...emoved from the reaction mixture and can be re-employed in other conversions (Making LSD in the Laboratory, 2005). Differences between cars and motorcycles Essay

There are many differences between cars and motorcycles. Some people out there like motorcycles over cars and some people prefer cars over motorcycles due to the safety factor of motorcycles compared to cars. Some Prefer the comfort of motorcycles but some prefer the comfort of cars. Then there is a cost difference between the cars and motorcycles as some prefer one over the other. I am going to tell you about the cost of motorcycles and cars, the comfort of motorcycles and cars, and the safety of motorcycles and cars. First, motorcycles are less expensive then cars. As you can see motorcycles can cost only a few thousand dollars. But cars can cost anywhere from a little more than a few thousand dollars to twenty thousand dollars and up. Cars are nice to have but depending on which one you prefer to purchase can cost you a pretty penny. You can get a small compact car which might only cost between seven and ten thousand dollars or you can get an SUV which would be over twenty thousand dollars. Motorcycles are not that expensive when compared to a car. You can get a motorcycle for under a few thousand dollars. Most people who look at this at a cost factor would prefer to go with a motorcycle to save money. Second, cars are more comforting to be in than motorcycles are. As you probably already know motorcycles are not that big and have a leather seat. The seat is not roomy enough and can get hot at times. This makes it really uncomfortable. Also lots of people like to wear motorcycle gear such as leather gloves and leather clothing such as leather pants. Leather pants can make it very uncomfortable to ride a motorcycle at any given time. Cars are big and very roomy. It’s actually very comfortable to be sitting down riding in one. The seats can be leather or cloth with a carpet like material. Sitting in the car driving does not bother the comfort. People have been driving cars for many years and are very well use to the comfort of them. Third, is the safety of cars and motorcycles when riding? Both cars and motorcycles are not safe at all. Some could say one is not safer than the other. But from hearing on the news about accidents with cars and Accidents with motorcycles we can say that they all have their fair share of safety problems. Motorcycles are not safe at all. Motorcycles ride on two wheels which we all know of. Motorcycles can go fast quickly and motorcyclists like to swerve in and out of lanes which cause a safety hazard. There is a lot of motorcycle related accidents all the time. Cars are dangerous also. There are car accidents being reported all the time. Even though cars seem like they are much safer than motorcycles they actually are not that safe. Some can argue that cars are safe or safer but they still cause a safety hazard out there. Every day there are plenty of car related accidents happening all the time? But having 4 wheels which a car has makes the car safer. But you are only safe as safe as the driver is. But not everyone is a safe driver things happen all the time without knowing. Finally, there are many differences between cars and motorcycles. But as we have learned there is the cost of motorcycles which is a lot less than the cost of cars. The comfort of cars how they are more roomy compared to a motorcycle which can be less comforting with all the motorcycle gear on and the small leather seat. And lastly we learned about the safety of driving a car as compared to a motorcycle learning that neither one is safer than the other and that we all get into accidents at one time or another.

Letter to Mayor

Dear Mayor, Being the Chief of Police for Los Angeles, I am strongly concerned at improving all the records, and the manner of using and accessing them.   With this goal, I propose computerization of all the police records as the new system.   Efforts towards computerization of all the police records must start early at this point, considering the fact that other data have been computerized already. In the information age, advanced technology can be taken advantage of without encountering significant risks.   Many businesses have already relied on computerization, such as banks, stores, libraries, and other companies that have complex business processes.   This fact has proven the advantages of computerizing all the records. Maintaining law and order is a difficult and has different aspects.   Despite that, several tasks involved in police offices are still routinary or can still be optimized further.   These tasks, being performed repetitively, are prone to human error, more so when workers are already exposed to long working hours and under psychological fatigue.   On the other hand, unintentional mistakes could have been avoided with the help of automation. In addition, instead of investing on personnel just to maintain records, human efforts could be focused on more important aspects in the government.   Instead of assigning people to perform tasks that a computer can do faster and more accurately, computers can be purchased in place of workers that must be paid every month. Details on fugitives, arrest records, warrants, missing persons, stolen property, and alerts relative to terrorism threats must be easily accessible to the police, so the fastest manner of updating, storing, and accessing data is preferred.   To answer this concern, a database is an appropriate option because it is where data can be stored and then be arranged easily and conveniently. The view of the data may be organized; irrelevant details may be hidden from the view of a certain user who is performing a certain task only, so that searching is more efficient and more secure.   Databases are used in many applications, spanning almost the entire range of computer software.   They are the preferred method of storage for large applications with many users. Databases can be managed more easily than analog data (such as card catalogs).   Moreover, since the data that are usually recorded on paper would be converted to electronic data, data loss and dilapidation is not a significant problem anymore.   In digital format, copies may be made without sacrificing quality, unlike copying analog data (e.g., using photocopiers).   Data can also be maintained more easily in digital format. In addition to speed, accuracy is also a good asset of having computerized records.   If the data are standardized and more centralized, redundancy is avoided.   Since transparency is increased through the computerization of police records, confusion can be avoided. Read also: â€Å"Co Curricular Activities Letter† Moreover, only authorized people can access sensitive data.   Security levels must be set in the computer system.   When police records are already computerized, information would not pass to many people only to deliver information to one person because the transaction can be made through machines and would therefore ensure privacy further. High overall efficiency may be achieved if the computerization of police records is implemented properly.   Moreover, if the relevant data are more accessible, tasks will be performed faster and more efficiently.   Trends may be studied and demography can easily be obtained using statistical methods and easily if data is centralized and consistent, so conducting criminal investigations would also be faster. Developing specialized software may be expensive, but the same computer program is used to all the police stations, and it may be used for a long time.   If some aspects of the electronic election process must be enhanced in the future, the existing system can be used as a foundation instead of starting everything from scratch.   Therefore, the cost of labor (in terms of time, energy, and money) is reduced in the long run. Before implementing the electronic system, studies must be thoroughly conducted regarding the effectiveness of the system in real scenarios, risks involved in implementation, and the cost and benefits.   Interested university students who have the relevant background may be encouraged to participate in conducting the research. Like any method of keeping records, computerized records are still susceptible to fraud.   However, considering the fact that the processes are standardized and centralized, errors and fraud attempts are detected more easily. Computer networks may be used as a medium, but the system must protect itself against identity theft and vandalism.   To minimize the potential negative impact of this new system, standards must be established, and more laws against computer crimes and breach of security must be strengthened.   The private information can be encrypted before being sent, and decrypted after being received at the other end.   Both the encryption and decryption algorithms can be performed conveniently using the software. Because of this move to computerization, one of the basic goals must be to ensure that every division/section in the police department is equipped with computers.   However, security requirements must still be tightened, and the access levels of the police must depend on his position and his scope of responsibilities.   These measures would avoid unauthorized access to sensitive data. Only the data that must be seen by the public.   The system must also allow citizens â€Å"to easily access and obtain several types of documentation, such as information on tainted vehicles, information on tainted firearms, domestic servant verification, and instant passport verification.† (â€Å"National Crime Records Bureau†, 2007). This method of storing data into digital format is not less secure than analog data. Both methods are susceptible to breach privacy, and true data security can only be achieved if everyone involved in the process have maintained their integrity as a person as they develop solutions to update and maintain the records, and the solution implemented is complex enough to be deciphered by hackers. This proposal is a good starting point to let the police and the people realize the benefits of automated systems.   Aside from the aforementioned benefits of computerization of police records, other benefits that may seem less obvious at this point will certainly be useful. Harnessing and exchange of information on criminal operating in neighboring states would be more plausible as soon as other states have also decided to strive for computerization of police records.   In the future, having a reliable police record may even provide room for other important transactions such as electronic voting.   Hence, continuing studies must still be conducted to further improve the service of the government to the people. We must start the process of standardizing the way the criminal records are maintained across the state, in order to allow efficient sharing of information and facilitating greater coordination to the higher level. I fervently hope that you share the same sentiments and the suggestions would be implemented.   Thank you for your kind consideration. Comparison Between My Last Duchess Ulysses Regarding Dramatic Monologue Essay Example

Comparison Between My Last Duchess Ulysses Regarding Dramatic Monologue Essay Example Comparison Between My Last Duchess Ulysses Regarding Dramatic Monologue Paper Comparison Between My Last Duchess Ulysses Regarding Dramatic Monologue Paper Question : What is a dramatic monologue? Which of the two, in your opinion, is the stronger dramatic monologue in Tennyson’s â€Å"Ulysses† or Brownings â€Å"My Last Duchess†? Answer : Traditionally dramatic monologue is a lyrical poem in the form of speech spoken by a single man. It is dramatic because it begins abruptly and in the development of its thought it takes several sudden turns which impart dramatic dimension to the poem. In a dramatic monologue the single speaker reveals his thoughts in the presence of a single silent listener or some silent listeners. The speaker is not necessarily the poet himself though the speaker often gives out the poets belief and philosophy. The speakers revelation, in fact, leads the readers to probe deep into the psycho-analytical or soul-dissecting. Therefore, a dramatic monologue is a kind of poem which comprises of lyrical strains, abrupt beginning, single speaker, silent listener or listeners, psychological analysis, clues to suggest the presence of the silent listeners and what they say or do. Robert Brownings â€Å"My Last Duchess† and â€Å"Andrea del Sarto†, Tennysons â€Å"Ulysses† and â€Å"Tithonus† are famous dramatic monologues. A dramatic monologue usually begins abruptly somewhere at the middle of the event. He beginning of Ulysses is not so sudden and surprising. The opening lines seem to have a tone of introduction : â€Å"It little profits that an idle king † It does not produce a surprising dramatic effect which is traditional for dramatic monologues. On the contrary, â€Å"My Last Duchess† begins with dramatic suddenness : Thats my last Duchess painted on the wall. † The readers understand that the event has begun earlier. But the poem begins somewhere in the middle of the speech giving a dramatic twist. A single person, Ulysses, speaks throughout the poem. It is understood that some of his old comrades are present around him. Ulysses encourages them in undertaking a new adventure. First, he tells them why he d oes not want to stay at home. Then, he asks them to start the journey. At times, he addresses them as â€Å"My friends† and â€Å"Come my friends†. He tells them, â€Å"you nd I are old. † These are the clues which lead us to believe that other mariners are present but they do not speak. Telemachus presence is also felt. Tennyson here follows the tradition of allowing one person to speak and keeping others silent. In â€Å"My Last Duchess† we see the same thing. As the poem progresses, it becomes clear that only a single person speaks. The speaker is the Duke of Ferrara who is talking about his dead Duchess portrait painted by Fra Pandolf. At several points of the poem it becomes evident that there is a listener who remains silent. For example, when the duke says â€Å"Willt please you sit and look at her? † or â€Å"Willt you please rise? † we understand that someone is present around him. Later in the poem, we come to know that he is an emissary for the second marriage of the Duke. Throughout the poem he does not talk. But his reactions are revealed through the Dukes speech. For example, the clue to understand the surprise in the emissarys face has been revealed by the Duke himself : â€Å"so not the first/ Are you to turn and ask thus. † We know he does not ask anything but there has been a question in his countenance. Tennyson reveals his hearts desire in â€Å"Ulysses†. This is another aspect of dramatic monologue. He says he does not enjoy peaceful life at home, and so, he wants to set out for new adventures. His inner thoughts have been revealed. However, the revelation is very simple and plain. The speaker here is more concerned with external things around him rather than psychological crises which are the essence of a successful dramatic monologue. In this aspect â€Å"My Last Duchess† also the same as â€Å"Ulysses†. Here the Duke while talking about the Duchess reveals his own mind. We understand that he is a possessive husband, a cruel person, a proud aristocrat, a greedy bridegroom but a connoisseur of artworks. He also reveals that the Duchess was an innocent, easy-going lady. These analyses of Dukes temperament are the essence of this dramatic look. It may now concluded that both the poems are fine examples of dramatic monologue though â€Å"Ulysses†s beginning is not so startling and it lacks psychological probing. So, from my point of view, â€Å"My Last Duchess† is more strong dramatic monologue than â€Å"Ulysses†.

The Problem of Evil Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

The Problem of Evil - Essay Example However, this world is filled with things beyond evil and people do feel pain and suffering, which contradicts the claims of orthodox theist that God is perfectly good. This conflict is called problem of evil. Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then is He impotent. Is He able, but not willing? Then is He malevolent. Is He both able and willing? Whence then is evil? (Hume) In an attempt to unravel the complexities of this predicament, few queries must be made. Evil goes beyond what we do not want other people to do to us. According to Hick, there are two classifications of evil. First, the moral evil which includes those acts an individual or group may be responsible of such as the seven deadly sins and more. Second type is the natural evil. Pain and suffering brought by natural calamities which people has no control over. Although the line which separates the two is still blurry, since some natural evil are consequences of human actions or lack of action. Nevertheless, we cannot deny the fact that there are things beyond our control ----- accidents and natural disasters. Evil is often associated with suffering which highlights an individual’s sense of pain or loss that focuses on a particular kind of evil: one which is considered as a consequence of an act rather than a more abstract concept. Thus arise another confusion which is the existence of hell ----- a place where God put those who have failed Him to rot and suffer; because this very notion contradicts the idea of a loving God. Augustinian theodicy argues that God is wholly good, thus He’s not responsible for the existence of evil in the world. It claims that evil is not the opposite; rather it is the absence of good. According to this theodicy, evil happens as a result of people’s misuse of their free will, therefore exonerating God and putting the blame of all evil and suffering to people who abuse their free will. This particular claim of Augustinian theodicy makes the subject more baffling, for it puts all the blame to the ‘finitely perfect’ being, that is us humans, who fails to choose perfection, hence shifting the blame back to the Creator. Moreover, the term ‘privation’ is inadequate justification for the apparent effects of evil in its truest sense. Then comes the knowledge of evolution ---- a process by which humans, being the most complex creatures, learn to adapt and grow in accordance with its environment. This is the claim of Irenaean theodicy which is restated by John Hick on his Soul-making theodicy. Hick defines soul-making as the existence of evil and suffering which allows flawed creatures to outgrow their imperfections and develop to a more perfect state. It emphasizes on the development by practicing free will, people are able to overcome temptations and suffering hence bringing them closer to perfection and to God. Unlike that of the Augustinians which give much stress on the negativity of the existence of evil, Irenaean theodicy puts God in an epistemic distance from us. It explains that this distance is meant for us to learn to love God on our own free-will by prevailing over all the difficulties He places on our path as we journey through life. Evil is created by God to hone the inner values we have, for some ideals need to go through some difficulties to develop like that of courage and forgiveness amidst suffering. This theodicy believes that individuals evolve towards a higher state by

Unisys Credit Problems Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Unisys Credit Problems - Essay Example ch Unisys has invested will contribute to a greater loss if the company were to use them to remain liquid and be able to fund its operations with the ultimate consequence being a rights issue to finance the deficit. This situation has forced the company to rethink its position on the revolving credit facility which it operates with various funding institutions to the tune of $275 million. The idea is not to renew it and avoid the escalating interests due to such. This presents the company with the challenge of how it will be able to finance its operations and come out of the financial crisis. The management theory available for use by the firm is that what has to be done for the business to remain a float must be done. The company’s management will therefore review the available options and make crucial decisions on which ones are relevant so as to implement the most effective ones. The alternatives available at the disposal of Unisys are numerous but not with serious economic consequences. It seemingly must repay the debt of $300 million by the time of expiry of the revolving credit facility. Unisys can seek funding through issuing additional shares in the market (Malz, 2011). This might not be popular with investors since the market is already volatile and most people, especially companies in the debt market such as Bloomberg realize that Unisys has the most expensive borrowing costs compared to other IT companies such as Affiliated Computer and IBM. The other possibility for Unisys is to cut down on employment expenses by laying-off employees so as to reduce operating expenses (Harvard business review on crisis management, 2000). This will only aggravate the problem as most firms would be interested to know what the situation is like to warrant such a decision. It might also result into low productivity due to reduced manpower. The uncertainty that will be accompanied by such a move would cause distrust amongst many clients, possible clients and financers
